Rotator Cuff Disease: Pathology, Pathophysiology, and Natural Course
Lee Shi-Uk

Abstract
Rotator cuff disease has been known to be an inflammatory process of the tendon of rotator cuff muscles. Most currently practising general practitioners were taught, and many still believe, that patients who present with overuse tendinitis have a largely inflammatory condition and will benefit by anti-inflammatory medications. However, because of disappointing results of clinical studies and better understanding of shoulder mechanics, it has become apparent that painful overuse tendon conditions such as rotator cuff have a non-inflammatory pathology. In this review article, these issues and the natural course of rotator cuff disease will be described.
